It is a Brazilian non-profit private organization, with no political or religious affiliations, which works for the protection of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlantica), one of the richest sets of ecosystems in terms of biodiversity, and also considered one of the most threatened with extinction on the planet.

It was created in 1986 as a sort of coalition that gathered people from different fields, such as entrepreneurs, journalists, scientists, and other professionals and environmentalists who already worked for other organizations.

The initial task was to provide knowledge globally regarding the existence of the Atlantic Forest, a biome of great importance due to its biodiversity, making it a priority for the domestic and international conservationist community. The campaign "Estão tirando o verde da nossa terra" ("They are removing the green from our land"), greatly broadcasted by the media, opened ground and gained the sympathy and engagement of the Brazilian and international society.

The development of its projects during its 22 years of existence have been carried out by a team of professionals working in six strategic lines, in the areas of public policies; campaigns; documentation, information and communication for conservation; environmental education and good citizenship; institutional development; and sustainable development, protection and handling of ecosystems.
